Biographies
John Dilworth
METHFESSEL, Gustav Born 1839 Berne, died 1910 Hilterfingen Switzerland. Apprenticed to P. Schulz in Regensburg. Worked for Lembock in Vienna. Established independently in Berne from 1864, later moving a short distance to Hilterfingen. Travelled widely in Italy to study classical instruments and accumulated a good collection of his own, many of which were bequeathed to the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. His shop was taken over by Max Bech and subsequently G. Lütschg. Good work on all classical models, each with oil varnish of appropriate shades. Gustave Methfessel fecit / Bernae Anno 18..
