Settled in Genoa 1856. Trained as a sculptor, self-taught violin and bow maker from 1883, located at 4/4 vico S.Pasquale. Moved to Marseille c.1903, in rue Darse, where he died the following year. MONTEFIORI, Erminio Born 1841 La Spezia Italy, died 1904 Marseilles France. Settled in Genoa 1856. Trained as a sculptor, self-taught violin and bow maker from 1883, located at 4/4 vico S.Pasquale. Moved to Marseille c.1903, in rue Darse, where he died the following year. Interesting work. Made use of salvaged wood from tables which shows old woodworm and other damage; backs quite plain or of eccentric cut. Low-arched model with well-cut scrolls, very wide across the eyes. Yellow or golden-brown varnish. Cellos quite successful. Continued to use the Genoa label when working in Marseilles. Instruments inscribed internally with various epigrams. Bows branded: MONTEFIORI.
