MOTHE (MOTTE, MATHE), Johannes Georg Born circa. 1695 Dresden Germany, died 1765 Ängelholm Sweden. Settled in Angelhom in 1723 after several years as a Russian prisoner of war during which time he learned violin making. Assisted by his son Joran from 1740; also by Jacob Helman who became his son-in-law in 1750. Rather poor violin illustrated by Nilsson: unpurfled with dark red-bown varnish and long stiff soundholes. Viol of 1735 and cello in viol form dated 1751 of more sophisticated workmanship with decorative edge banding, both in the possession of the Academic Orchestra, Lund.
