MURDOCH, Alexander Born 1815, died 1891 Glenbuchatet, Scotland UK. Established in Aberdeen by 1865, at 9 Minster Lane up until c.1900. Thereafter in partnership with Alexander Dingwall, established as Murdoch and Dingwall, Market Gallery, Aberdeen. Dingwall later worked in Glasgow. Possibly a pupil of Thomas Jamieson, though usually referred to as self-taught. Author of The Fiddle in Scotland (Ascherberg, London, 1888). Idiosyncratic style but often well-made and accurately finished, although his work is inconsistent. Many cheaper grade instruments made without purfling, poor materials, and pallid grey varnish. Some branded beneath the button: ‘Murdoch, Aberdeen’. Signed internally. Alex Murdoch / Aberdeen 1870 Alex Murdoch / Maker Aberdeen 1886
In manchen
