John Dilworth

ORTEGA, Silverio Worked circa. 1770-1820 Madrid Spain Pupil of Dom Vicenzo Ascensio and his successor as luthier to the Spanish court. Unfortunately best known for his role in cutting down the ‘Spanish Bass’, the Stradivari cello of 1696 made for the court. His own work is very distinguished, usually of flat arch on a personal but well conceived model. Stradivarian soundholes with a slight inward slope. Pegbox rather straight and with a shallow recurve to the chin. Volute neatly cut but with small chamfer. Some with blackened chamfer in the manner of Stradivari. Fine golden-orange varnish, thinly applied. Compuesto pr Silverio Ortega / En Madrid Año 1785 Silverius Ortega fecit / Matriti, anno 1798
