RECALDINI, Zuann Born 1621, died 1697 Venice Italy. Recorded as a musician and violin and bass maker working at the sign ‘Al Basso’ from c.1644. From 1694 he is described as a harpsichord maker, as was his son Paolo. Two small-sized violoni in the Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels. Both flat-backed with canted upper bouts, five-strings; one with a violin-like head but with an extra complete turn to the volute, the other with a flat sided head and pegbox with incised volute, in the style of Ciciliano. Very developed violin form ‘f’ soundholes, with large, outswinging lower part. Man kennt sowohl Lauten als Geigen von ihm. Die Arbeit ist gut, wenn auch nicht aussergewöhnlich. Die kgl. Sammlung in Berlin besitzt eine reich eingelegte italienische Guitarre von 1609 und eine romanische Theorbe dieses Meisters. De Piccolellis und Vidal schreiben Rechiardini und setzen irrthümlich das 18. Jahrhundert als seine Lebenszeit an; Andere lesen gar Bechardini. In einem Terzino di Contrabasso (Baryton) der Sammlung Correr in Venedig findet sich der nebenstehende Zettel. Andere lesen übrigens »del bosco«.
