Obwohl er handwerksmässig arbeitete, nie aus seinem Heimathsorte hinausgekommen war und kaum je eine wirklich gute Geige gesehen hat, kann er doch wegen seiner Geschicklichkeit neben den Brüdern Lutz und Anton Fischer als einer der besten Schönbacher Meister seiner Zeit gelten. Auch galt er als tüchtiger Lehrmeister.
