SANTAGIULIANA, Giacinto Born 1781, died 1853 Vicenza Italy. Son and pupil of Gaetano Santagiuliana, above. Generally Stradivari models with flat arch. Not highly refined. Thin chippy orange-red varnish. Local materials, especially Tuscan ‘oppio’ field maple, often fairly plain. Scrolls rounded and concentric but notable for the very slender chamfer and generally soft abraded finish. Fine cellos and double basses. Jacintus Santagiuliana fecit / Vicetiae Anno 1815

Nachdem er Anfangs in Vicenza gearbeitet hatte, liess er sich nach 1780 in Venedig nieder, wo er in hohem Alter starb. Seine Geigen sind nicht besonders gut.

Vicenza, Venice. 1770—1830. Worked at Vicenza up to 1780, later in Venice. His typical specimens are designed on the large model of Amati. The edges are somewhat grooved, the purfling rather broad; long corner edges; large sound-holes; large, deeply cut scrolls. The wood, particularly the maple he used, is of excellent quality. He applied, with delicate taste, good orange-coloured varnish. Instruments by him, particularly his ‘cellos, have a powerful tone. Price 15 — 30.000 Kc, ‘cello more.
