SCHERMERHORN, Hayes Born circa. 1896 Seattle, Washington, d. after 1926 Portland, Oregon USA. Barber and part-time violin maker in Seattle. Established in Los Angeles from 1920 where he ran a violin making school. Finally settled in Portland after 1926. Restorer and maker. Over 200 instruments made on Stradivari and Guarneri derived models, and copies of individual master instruments. Fine work using high quality local woods and oil varnish of his own formulation, which he later sold commercially.
