Angelo de Toppani

TOPPANI, Angelo de Born circa. 1700 Venice, Worked circa. 1740-1767 Rome Italy. Recorded as a ‘violinaro’ near Chiesa Novara in Rome 1742-1748 and from 1760 ‘near the Palazzo del Drago’. A maker in Rome about 1720-40. His instruments, which are rarely seen, are similar to those of Techler, but are more arched; the varnish is a golden-yellow colour, and the sound-holes are cut large. Label: ” Angelus de Toppanis fecit Romae, anno Dni. 1740.”

Einer der besseren römischen Geigenmacher seiner Zeit. Er verwendet ein hochgewölbtes Modell von stark geschwungenen Umrisslinien und steht im Ganzen David Tecchler nahe. Sein Lack ist goldgelb, der Ton einschmeichelnd.

Pupil of David Tecchler. Slightly arched instruments. Gilt yellow varnish. Sound holes German fashion. Long corners.

Rome. 1735—1750. His instruments remind of those of David Tecchler, only the sound-holes are somewhat larger. The purfling is inaccurate, the edges rather broad. The arching is moderately high. He applied a golden-yellow varnish. The tone of his instruments is strong and agreeable. Price 15 — 25.000 Kc.
