War Anfangs Militärmusiker, wurde von Straube beim Repariren und beim Bau neuer Streichinstrumente angeleitet und brachte es darin zu einer gewissen Fertigkeit. Seine Streichinstrumente, die alle sehr stark im Holz sind, finden im Orchester gute Verwendung, sind aber oft roh ausgeführt und wenig elegant in der Form. Auch sein Holz und sein dunkler Lack lassen zu wünschen übrig. — Sein Sohn, der noch 1861 lebte, war sein Nachfolger.
