A heavily carved violin known as the ‘King James’, until recently part of the Victoria & Albert Museum collection, is attributed to him on the basis of one other similarly ornate instrument with his label. Other similar but undecorated violins are known with his label. An advertisement with his name appealing for information about a lost instrument appeared in the London Gazette in 1685. Moved to Edinburgh c.1707 when his services as a maker of ‘violin, bass violin, tenor violin, the viol de gambo, the lute quiver, the trumpet marine, the harp,…’ were advertised in the Edinburgh Courant.
