Zosimo Bergonzi
Cremona, 1724–1779
Son of Carlo Bergonzi (I), above. For a short time c.1760 he was the only active luthier in Cremona, but evidence of his work is slight. A mandolin dated 1770 is in the collection of the Museo Stradivariano, Cremona, and a child’s violin survives, with painted imitation purfling, dated 1775. However\u{2026} — John Dilworth

BERGONZI, Zosimo Born 1724, died 1779 Cremona Italy. Son of Carlo Bergonzi (I), above. For a short time c.1760 he was the only active luthier in Cremona, but evidence of his work is slight. A mandolin dated 1770 is in the collection of the Museo Stradivariano, Cremona, and a child’s violin survives, with painted imitation purfling, dated 1775. However, also in the Museo Stradivariano collection are two violin moulds inscribed with his name. [Gindin]

Brother of Nicola. He worked about the same time, perhaps had more ability ; some violoncellos and double-basses of his are fairly well made, but the work, like that of his brother, is much inferior to Carlo’s. He used a label ornamented like that of Carlo: ” Fatto da me Zosimo Bergonzi, l’anno 1777, Cremonae.”
