BRANDSTAETTER, Mathias Ignaz Born circa. 1791, died 1851 Vienna Austria. Stradivari model. Well-controlled craftsmanship and finish, although the scroll is comparatively clumsy. Fine materials and usually good varnish of shaded gold to orange-red colour. The workshop was continued after his death by Anton Hoffmann who completed unfinished instruments, generally using an inferior dull brown varnish, but continued to use the Brandstaetter label. Bürgereid ab. Er stand als Reparateur in grossem Ansehen. Ein Reparatur-Zettel von ihm in Brüssel (Mus. d. Cons. No. 258), ein ebensolcher in einer
theorbirten Laute von Pradter, die sich in den Sammlungen des A. H. Kaiserhauses
in Wien, Burgring 5, befindet. Ein Johann Brandstätter soll von 1840
bis 1855 in Wien gelebt haben.
