DOLLENZ, Giovanni Born 1802, died 1857 Trieste Italy. Double bassist in the Orchestra of the Gran Teatro Civico di Trieste until 1853. Henley et al. suggest that he learned from Storioni, but this would be an impossible anachronism. Storioni was present briefly in Trieste in 1804, when Dollenz was an infant. Superficial similarities in the work of the two makers may be entirely due to the presence of some of Storioni’s work in the city. More likely to have come under the influence of Pelizon. His own work dates from 1830 at the earliest, and is very competent, with good low arching and a well-balanced outline. A characteristic feature is the rather downward pointing upper corners. Other notable mannerisms are the prominent straight cut nicks of the soundholes, which have no flute in the lower wings. The scroll is neat and well-rounded, but the last turn is truncated. The varnish is a hard chippy spirit concoction which does not flatter the instruments, and is often a golden-brown shade. Giovanni Dollenz / Fecit in Trieste, Anno 1835
