Biographies
John Dilworth
BRYANT, Ole H. Born 1873, died 1943 Thornton, New Hampshire USA. Son of Charles Henry Bryant, above; pupil also of Charles Gage. Active from 1885. Moved to Wolfeboro with his father, subsequently to Boston as repairer for the Elias Howe Company 1894. Worked with his uncle Edmund, above, in Boston 1905-1908 and for Oliver Ditson until 1910. Established his own shop in Thornton. 162 violins of Guarneri and Stradivari model with amber oil varnish, of exceptionally fine quality; also three violas and two cellos. Employed a substantial staff of craftsmen who signed each instrument individually. Highly regarded in his time as an expert connoisseur, and did a great deal of repair work for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Taught violin making at summer schools in Boston and Wolfeboro near Lake Winnepesaukee. Instruments made by his assistants bear their individual labels and sometimes the words ‘under the instruction of O. H. Bryant’. O. H. Bryant / Boston. Mass. / 1926. / No. O.H.B ..
