Biographies
John Dilworth
CALLIER, Frank J. Born 1883 St Louis, Missouri, died 1971 Hollywood, California USA. Violin and bow maker of French parentage. Worked in St. Louis 1900-1914, San Antonio (Texas) 1916-1926, and finally settled in Hollywood from 1928. The business was continued after his death by his son Paul, and from 1984 by Craig Scollard. Made about 300 violins, three violas, and three cellos. Concentrated on bow making after 1918. Well designed and executed bows in personal style, but also copied classical French models. Sticks rubbed with oil then coated with spirit varnish. Some 1,500 bows completed. Medals awarded in Chicago 1925 and Philadelphia 1926. Very fine work. Instruments branded internally: ‘FJC‘. Bows branded ‘FRANK J CALLIER’
