CARLANDER, Elias Born 1721, died 1784 Stocholm Sweden. Primarily a violinist in the court orchestra of Stockholm. Application for a licence to make instruments in 1751 rejected, but granted special permission from the King in 1760. After his retirement from the orchestra c.1775 his previously meagre productivity increased substantially. Stainer modelled instruments with rather thin golden brown varnish, often without purfling on the back, nor sometimes on the front. Mostly rather crude, but exceptional instruments are found. Handwritten label with simple ruled border: Elias Carlander / Kongl Hof / Musicus J. Stockholm Ao 17..
