John Dilworth

CARLISLE, James Reynold Born 1886 Ashland, Kentucky, d. after 1940 Cincinatti, Ohio USA. Worked in Charleston 1900-1914, with emphasis on varnish development, resulting in a good dark red formula of his own called ‘Italian sunshine varnish’. Subsequently joined Wurlitzer in Cincinnati, associated with A. W. Beach in selling commercial instruments with this varnish applied. Stradivari model. Guarneri pattern used after 1940. Production continued after Carlisle’s retirement. About 500 instruments bear his label, but only about 75 are fine handmade quality. These are either early work with a manuscript label, or are at later dates identified by a thumbprint on the left side of the label. No.. J. R. Carlisle Cincinnati Ohio [Wenberg]
