Biographies
John Dilworth
CHARDON, André Born 1897, died 1963 Paris France. Son and pupil of Marie Joseph Chardon, below. Active from 1911, but called for military service in 1915. Returned to Paris 1919; continued bow making and violin repair and adjustment. From c.1930 adopted the underslide developed by W. E. Hill & Sons in London, and evolved his own style based on Tourte and Peccatte, while established independently at 39 rue de Rome. Benefitted from a large stock of aged pernambuco acquired by his father and grandfather. Succeeded to the family business in 1949, in partnership with his sister Joséphine. Small output, but fine quality bows. Branded: ‘CHANOT et CHARDON. PARIS’, and ‘CHARDON à PARIS’ in the usual place on the handle, also ‘C.C.C.’ on handle above frog. [Millant/Raffin]
