COLTON, Walter Ewing Born 1846, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died 1913, Exeter, New Hampshire USA. Violinist and self-taught amateur maker in New York c.1880. Influenced by George Gemunder. About 50 instruments completed of very high quality, in the style of Vuillaume and Gemunder. Presented Ole Bull with a copy of his Gasparo da Salò violin, rather frighteningly made from the wood of a 1743 Gabrielli bass, according to Vannes. Vannes goes on to say that Gabrielli himself took the wood from a joist of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Florence.
