HOFMANN, Anton Born 1814, died 1871 Vienna Austria. Apprenticed to J. Martin Stoss in Vienna and succeeded to his business in 1838. Appointed maker to the Austrian Imperial Court. Personal model with dark red oil varnish. Most made by his assistant W. T. Guterman 1851-1866. Cellos from the earlier period highly regarded; later examples used cheaper materials and poor spirit varnish.
