LEEB, Johann Georg (II) Born circa. 1740, d.c.1813 Bratislava (Pressburg) Slovakia Son and successor of Johann Georg Leeb (I), above, active c.1779-1810. One of the most influential and important makers of the Hungarian school. Generally Amatisé and personal models, his own being flat-arched and Bergonzi-like. Accurate workmanship. Fine wood used for the fronts, but maple usually of very ordinary quality. Instruments themselves in various grades, and varnish from thin dark and almost opaque, to fine red-brown, although quite thin textured. Joannes Georgius Leeb / fecit Posonii. 1783 [Benedek]
