MANTEGAZZA, Francesco Born 1762, died 1824 Milan Italy. Son, pupil, and successor of Pietro Giovanni Mantegazza, below. Worked with Carlo, above, as Fratelli Mantegazza. Important makers and repairers, as well as informants of Count Cozio di Salabue. Carried out a great deal of repair and modernisation work for him. Generally credited with devising the technique of neck grafting which they applied to a great number of antique instruments whose original neck settings had become inadequate for more ambitious players. Original work is very highly finished and well regulated, generally with a harder varnish than that of their father, with a slightly cold golden yellow tone. Finely worked concentric scrolls and slightly elongated but elegant soundholes. A series of contralto violas are particularly highly regarded.
