Vermuthlich ein Sohn von Franz Schmidt. In der Imitation alter Meistergeigen war er nicht ungeschickt; auch seine übrigen Arbeiten verriethen eine kunstgeübte Hand. 1873 erhielt er auf der Wiener Welt-Ausstellung ein Anerkennungsdiplom. Da er auch theoretisch gebildet war, wurde er als Lehrmeister geschätzt.
